Global Discovery Vacations Review: The Florida Trip that Almost Wasn’t

Global Discovery Vacations member Patricia K. originally planned to spend the holidays in Daytona Beach, Florida, but Hurricane Matthew swept through and made them change course for Destin, Florida. After an impressive amount of juggling, Patricia and her family ended up having an enjoyable stay together at the Amalfi Coast Resort. This week’s Member Monday tells you how it happened.
Global Discovery Vacations Review: The Florida Trip that Almost Wasn’t

Where would you recommend a fellow member to go to…
When we weren’t relaxing and enjoying our meals in our unit we had a vast array of quality restaurants to choose from, most within walking distance.

The best bet in the area for a quick burger was Back Yard Burgers. For ambiance on the beach at sunset, you can’t go wrong with Pompano Joe’s. Let’s not forget Kenny D’s Beach Bar & Grill – this little hidden gem serves up authentic Cajun cuisine.

What was your favorite…
Resort/Condo Amenity:
We were in a spacious third-floor modern condo just across the street from the pristine beaches of Destin. The condo had all the amenities of home and then some.

The best part was the shopping carts provided by the elevator. When I arrived early and solo, I did the shopping for Thanksgiving and was able to bring all the groceries up to the unit (and inside) in one trip! I could definitely get used to that little perk.

The real beauty was the resort’s pool area at night illuminating the darkness.

Why did you choose this destination? Were you traveling for a special occasion?
Thanksgiving with college students. With one student in New England and another in Daytona Beach and only four days off for break, it made sense to spend the holiday near one of their schools. This eliminated at least one person travelling during the busiest time of the year.

Last year was in Stowe, Vermont, and this year was The Maverick in Daytona Beach, Florida, or it was supposed to be until Matthew pummeled through the Atlantic Coast.

With the Maverick closed for repairs, luckily, I was able to re-book in Destin on an expressway. While still in the same state, it entailed quite a bit of driving and coordinating back and forth between the airport (MCO), college and the Amalfi Coast Resort. But once there, it was well worth the trouble.

What was your favorite memory of your vacation?
We rounded out our Thanksgiving by slothing on the sofas with “The Gilmore Girls” Netflix reunion (we brought our ROKU, a definite plus to have when you are just plain tuckered out). We were resting up for a Black Friday afternoon of shopping at the Silver Sands Premium Outlet Mall, snatching up some great deals without the big city crowds.

About you

Why did you join the club?
Like most, I procrastinated spending the time and energy to attend yet another timeshare presentation.

Then, late in 2014 while recovering from knee surgery and bored out of my mind at home, I decided to take a listen. After hearing their speech, I was intrigued but not sold. Then came the sit-down where prices were presented.

After recalling my recent vacation the past spring break in Galveston where my half of a shared condo off the beaten path was nearly $1,000, I jumped at the chance to vacation several times a year for minimal costs!

How many trips have you taken using your membership?
My favorite way to book my Global Discovery Vacations condo is using the Expressways and waiving the fee with my star.

As an employee of a major airline, I not only fly standby but have to plan my trips last minute and am used to “winging it” when it comes to choosing a vacation destination. This method has allowed me to not only travel on the dime but adds adventure as to where our travels will take us.

Why do you think traveling is important?
I consider Global Discovery Vacations to be an investment – an investment in myself.
