Take a Hike
Tie your laces and go outside. You can take a walk around the block and get a feel for the area you are staying in or make plans to take on some nearby trails. If you are near a beach, then you can get the added health benefits of walking on sand. Doing so barefoot will work the foot and leg muscles even more.
Unless you really can’t live without your kettlebells and dumbbells, you will have to leave these heavyweights behind when you travel. This is a great time to get creative with lighter alternatives, such as resistance bands, balance balls (don’t forget your pump) or a jump rope. One item I have had success with, is a set of dumbbells that can be filled with water. This will give you something to work with for light to moderate exercises.
Use Your Own Body
For a back to basics approach, there are many workouts that don’t involve anything more than your own body. Think push-ups, crunches, planks, jumping jacks and lunges. If you need inspiration on a full-body workout and you have an internet connection, then all you need to do is fire up your laptop or tablet and do a YouTube-search. One of my personal favorites is the FitnessBlender channel.
Use Your Surroundings As a Gym
From swimming laps in the ocean to doing your workout at a park, fitness opportunities are in the eye of the beholder. You can go boulder jumping, tree climbing or lift some heavy rocks. If that sounds a little too primal, you’d be happy to learn that fitness parks are gaining in popularity. These outdoor spaces offer fitness equipment for free. You’ll find push-up bars, chest press machines, balance boards and elliptical machines to name but a few.
Find a Gym Near Your Vacation Destination
If your workout has to be done within the confines of the gymnasium, then getting a day-pass is the way to go. Many gyms allow visitors to use their facility for a fee.
