One Travel Agent’s Journey through Alaska

If you’ve never experienced Alaska, you’re in for a true treat. This awe-inspiriting country is a favorite for bucket list wishes for a reason! Our own Global Discovery Vacations Travel Consultant Christy Z. got the chance to explore Alaska’s rugged beauty on a familiarization trip with Holland America. She loved it so much, she’s sharing her experience and offering you the chance to take the same adventure next summer.
One Travel Agent’s Journey through Alaska

“My Land and Sea Alaska Journey with Holland America began in Vancouver, Canada,” Christy said. “I cruised for three nights before a nine day interior tour. We had one port of call stop in Juneau, Alaska, where I took a whale-watching cruise excursion. We were very fortunate and came across a pod of 13 whales!”

Christy sailed on Holland America’s ms Nieuw Amsterdam, a ship that celebrates the glamour and history of New York City with its inspired interior design and art collection. Her favorite, and of many others on her cruise, was the BB King Blues Club, a definite must see on the ship.

While cruising was amazing, the most exciting part of the trip for Christy was traveling through the Yukon in the Canada and Alaska interior for nine days with a journey host.

“I learned a lot about the Alaska gold rush, as the motor coach drivers are very knowledgeable and have many funny stories and jokes,” she said. “We took the tundra wilderness tour in Denali and were very fortunate to see Mount Denali and a mama grizzly bear with her two cubs.”

The last part of the trip was very relaxing, with a ride in a dome car aboard the McKinley Explorer train to end her journey in Anchorage, Alaska.

Before you take off to Alaska, Christy has a few tips for you:

  • Dress in layers as the weather changes often.
  • Be flexible because schedules are sometimes thrown off due to weather conditions or transportation delays.
  • Must-have items include camera, extra batteries (rechargeable or regular) and binoculars.
  • And on any cruise to Alaska, choose a balcony cabin — you never know what kind of wildlife you’ll see.

Perhaps her most important tip is when to book your trip.

“Alaska vacations sell quickly due to their shortened travel season of May to September,” Christy advises. “I recommend you extend your vacation with pre-night and possibly post-night stay because you start and end in a different city that you’ll want the chance to visit.”

You can venture off to Alaska like Christy did on an 11-Day Yukon Double Denali Land + Sea Journey on the ms Nieuw Amsterdam, sailing from Anchorage, Alaska, on June 28, 2017.  Even better, you can score more with the limited-time explore4 deal from Holland America, offering you up to $2,000 in offers, including a signature beverage package, Pinnacle Grill dinner, reduced fares for friends and kids and 50% reduced deposit.

Interested? Call Christy for details about the vacation and the explore4 from Holland America by calling her directly at (855) 999-7654 ext. 7862. (Star Credits do not apply to this cruise.)
